OnFebruary 16, 2022at 18:00 an on-line session of the regular "Migration studies" seminar at the Institute of Social Policy of the Higher School of Economics  Yan Matusevich, Anthropology PhD Student at Graduate Center, City University of New York) Friends Among Strangers: Labor Migration from Central Asia and Russia to South Korea

This presentation is devoted to the post-Soviet labor migration to South Korea and its social, economic and cultural characteristics. Against the backdrop of a growing shortage of labor, since the early 2000s, South Korea began to actively attract foreign workers, including labor migrants from Russia and Central Asian countries. Despite difficult working conditions and a language barrier, the abundance of work in Korean factories, small businesses, agriculture and the service industry attracts a heterogeneous contingent of labor migrants consisting of Russian-speaking ethnic Korean repatriates (koryo-saram), official labor teams from Uzbekistan and illegal temporary migrant workers from Russia and Kazakhstan. The report will examine the emergence of new systems of social relations and hierarchies within this new, diverse migratory environment, using the example of ethnographic work carried out in the so-called "Russian quarters", which are rapidly becoming an integral part of the Korean urban landscape.
